Saturday 6th October – The Wonder of creation

Saturday 6th October – The Wonder of creation
October 5, 2018 Judith Simms

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars that you have established;
what are human beings that you are mindful of them,
mortals that you care for them?
Yet you have made them a little lower than God,
and crowned them with glory and honour.
You have given them dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under their feet,
all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field,
the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

(Psalm 8:3-8, NRSV)

These beautiful words of praise from Psalm 8 often remind me of the true wonder of the universe. The reference to the stars is a clear reminder that compared to the vastness of the universe, I’m really small. Yet despite this, God values me, values all people, regardless of what they have done.

The words of this Psalm always inspire me to wonder at the amazing nature of our awesome God.

Two hymns that also remind me of the vastness of creation and the fact that I am still known by God are Indescribable, uncontainable by Chris Tomlin and Creation calls by Brian Doerksen. Both are beautiful to listen to as a reminder that we are part of a diverse creation.

Awesome Creator God
You created all things,
from the vastness of the universe to the tiniest living creatures.
All that you created is perfect and intricate,
beyond anything that we could ever conceive on our own.
We cannot understand why we are important to you
 yet you have chosen us to share in the wonder of your creation.
Help us to appreciate your creation and to do our part to protect it in all its glory.
“O Lord our God, how majestic is your name in all the earth.” *
Amen
