Pauline Beattie

Pauline is Forum Rep for the Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury District

I’m an itinerant Methodist. I’ve moved house more times than my Methodist minister father-in-law, and then moved on to a home that moved: a narrow boat.  Andrew and I travelled the navigable waterways of England and Wales for 15+ years before moving into our house in Walsall just four years ago.  I’m finding my way around the Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury District, having previously lived in south east England, Berkshire and the Birmingham District.

I’ve been an accredited Local Preacher for more than half a century and an organist and choir member for services for longer than that.  It’s as well I have a degree in Music and Biblical Studies.  In the meantime I’ve brought up our five children and am now ‘Grandy’ to their ten.

In 1979, I was the first Methodist Local Preacher to be responsible for the live broadcast of the Sunday service on BBC radio 4 and, at the same time, the first woman to preach live on Radio 4. This led to other broadcasts including Prayer for the Day, Thought for the Day, and introducing Sunday Half Hour.
