Resurrection John 20: 1-18<\/p>\n

In one version of the resurrection story, the women go to the tomb with oils and spices to fulfil the expectations of burial rituals. The perfume is now for the dead, not the living Jesus. The women want to make certain that Jesus\u2019 body receives the care, which, by tradition should be given to him. They went before sunrise, not wanting to be seen, if there were soldiers on guard at the tomb. An intended action of loyalty and devotion to Jesus, ends up with one of the women being the first to encounter the risen Jesus.<\/p>\n

\u201cEarly in the morning on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone was moved away from the entrance. She ran at once to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, gasping for breath. \u201cThey took the Master from the tomb. We don\u2019t know where they\u2019ve put him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Peter and the other disciple left immediately for the tomb. They ran, neck and neck. The other disciple got to the tomb first, outrunning Peter. Stooping to look in, he saw the pieces of linen cloth lying there, but he didn\u2019t go in. Simon Peter arrived after him, entered the tomb, observed the linen cloths lying there, and the kerchief used to cover his head not lying with the linen cloths but separate, neatly folded by itself. Then the other disciple, the one who had gotten there first, went into the tomb, took one look at the evidence, and believed. No one yet knew from the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead. The disciples then went back home.<\/p>\n

But Mary stood outside the tomb weeping. As she wept, she knelt to look into the tomb and saw two angels sitting there, dressed in white, one at the head, the other at the foot of where Jesus\u2019 body had been laid. They said to her, \u201cWoman, why do you weep?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey took my Master,\u201d she said, \u201cand I don\u2019t know where they put him.\u201d After she said this, she turned away and saw Jesus standing there. But she didn\u2019t recognize him. Jesus spoke to her, \u201cWoman, why do you weep? Who are you looking for?\u201d<\/p>\n

She, thinking that he was the gardener, said, \u201cSir, if you took him, tell me where you put him so I can care for him.\u201d Jesus said, \u201cMary.\u201d<\/p>\n

Turning to face him, she said in Hebrew, \u201cRabboni!<\/em>\u201d meaning \u201cTeacher!\u201d<\/p>\n

Jesus said, \u201cDon\u2019t cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go to my brothers and tell them, \u2018I ascend to my Father and your Father, my God and your God.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Mary Magdalene went, telling the news to the disciples: \u201cI saw the Master!\u201d And she told them everything he said to her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prayer<\/p>\n

In our times of doubt, fear and panic how often we fail to recognise the constant presence of Jesus. Forgive us, God, for our doubts and uncertainties and fill us with your constant inspirational love. Amen<\/p>\n
