We also heard about the Chapel (built 1861) which is a gem, having beautiful stained glass windows designed by Christine Boyce and delightful woodwork. It is open to the public daily, offering hospitality to all visitors, as well as having services every quarter; so still witnessing to God.

In1818 the village was just a row of terraced houses, then as the harbour began to be constructed, it grew in its heyday to the size it is today (to learn more please visit BBC iPlayer). After lunch, prepared by ladies from Carlisle MC, we had a tour in bright sunshine led by Harold, learning more of the history & buildings, which included a former bathhouse and hotel.

For those who stayed in the chapel, there were activities to enjoy, and our fascinating day was brought to a conclusion by Rev David Newlove, who led our final worship.

I would well recommend a visit, but not when the tides are high!! Delphine

Cumbria MWiB held their Spring meeting on May 22nd at Port Carlisle, an area presented on BBC’s “Villages by the Sea”.
