In June I was delighted to travel to Rwanda with Revd Dr Andrew Ashdown\u00a0 from Global Relations. As co-ordinator for the whole of Africa, Andrew had a wealth of knowledge and experience which he was generous to share. We were the guest of Bishop Samuel as head of the Free Methodist Church in Rwanda.<\/p>\n

It was for me a visit full of surprises.<\/p>\n

Having been told to pack for their hot summer the temperature dropped to around\u00a0 17\u00a0 degrees\u00a0 as soon as I arrived and I was accused of bringing the British weather with me. Although it was hot at times\u00a0 much of Rwanda is green and hilly and even has its own rain forest so the climate was very comfortable.<\/p>\n

I was able to travel from the border with Uganda to the border with Congo and see the rich variety of\u00a0 the landscape from dry and dusty to lush and tropical with some mountains thrown in for good measure. Rwanda was incredibly beautiful. It is also the cleanest\u00a0\u00a0 country in Africa. There is a strong environmental policy with plastic bags declared as\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 illegal and single use plastics discouraged. In the capital Kigali I can honestly say I did not see any litter on the streets There is a citizens charter where each citizen is expected to give\u00a0 time back to their community. every two weeks.<\/p>\n

Rwanda is amazingly self\u00a0 sufficient , growing fruit , rice and vegetables. Their coffee is amazing and I particularly enjoyed fresh pineapple and bananas for breakfast\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 every\u00a0 morning of my stay. The picture shows me meeting the ladies from \u2018A friend in need cooperative\u2019 growing pineapples in the hills<\/p>\n

On a more sombre note I was able to visit two of the many genocide memorials which was very moving. I\u00a0 had not fully registered that the genocide was thirty years ago and the churches are still heavily involved in peace and reconciliation work. Despite some issues regarding public health and safety\u00a0 the church is thriving and active.<\/p>\n

I was also able to explore the role of women in the five year plan for the church. I was pleased to see that enabling and empowering the role of women was visible in every\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 section. I was able to visit the theological college where women candidates are increasing year on year.<\/p>\n

Bishop Samuel invited me to preach on Pentecost Sunday as he hoped it would encourage\u00a0 other women. The jury may be out on this but it was an immense privilege.<\/p>\n
