Saturday 5th September – God revealed through Jesus

Saturday 5th September – God revealed through Jesus
September 4, 2020 Judith Simms

God said to Moses, “I am who I am.”
And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel:
I am has sent me to you.”
          [Exodus 3: 14]

Long ago, at many times and in many ways,
God spoke to our fathers by the prophets,
but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son,
whom he appointed the heir of all things,
through whom also he created the world.
          [Hebrews 1: 1–2]

We have been looking at the various ways that God reveals Godself to us. So far, we have looked at general revelations that are available to all people and tell us something about God. Now we turn more to special revelations of God, which are often specific to a place, person, or group of people.

One of the special ways that God reveals Godself is through the person of Jesus Christ – God in human form. You may think it odd that the passage I have chosen is from Exodus, rather than one of the gospels, yet when speaking to Moses, God reveals the name I AM, which is later used by Jesus in John’s gospel.

In John’s gospel we see Jesus as the way, the truth and the life, bread of life, light of the world, the vine, the gate, good shepherd, the resurrection and the life. These all reveal aspects of who God is – someone who cares, protects, heals, guides, and much more. Through Jesus we see a God who cares for the outcast, loves the unlovable, and goes the extra mile to reach those who seem beyond hope. We also see a God who teaches and rebukes, trying hard to help us be the best we can be, loving and forgiving us.

God the son,
Through you we see God
In ways that are clearer for us to see
How we should love others,
Seek the lost,
Care for the sick,
Bring hope,
And fight injustice.
As we see God, help us to be more like you –
God’s image on earth.
Amen
