Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back
with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, and the Israelites went
through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left.
[Exodus 14: 21–22]
Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her.
[Luke 4: 38–39a]
Miracles are a special revelation of God. In the gospels, Jesus is recorded as performing 37 different miracles. These miracles include healings, resurrection, exorcisms and nature miracles. Similar types of miracles can also be seen throughout the biblical narrative and they all reveal different things about God.
Nature miracles, such as walking on water, feeding the 5000, or the fire that consumed Elijah’s sacrifice to God, all demonstrate that God is the creator. God has control over creation and can act in ways that seem to be against the laws of nature, because God created those laws. Resurrection miracles also demonstrate that God has ultimate control over life and death, and that death is not the end.
Healing miracles demonstrate God’s love and care for those in need, and exorcisms demonstrate that God is ultimately in control, even over the powers of evil. This reassures us that God is ultimately in control of all things.
Miraculous God
You are awesome,
Too much for our minds to grasp –
Yet you love us,
Walk beside us,
Take interest in our lives.
We thank you for your love,
For your care,
For your presence in our lives.
Miraculous God, walk with us and love us always.
Amen
