We are thinking about times when God surprises.
Luke 10 38-42 NIV
As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. Shehad a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better and it will not be taken away from her.”
Reflection
Jesus is talking and Mary is listening to what he is saying, sitting at his feet. Martha seems to be stressed with all that needs to be done and is annoyed that her sister isn’t helping her.
How often do we put things that we consider important ahead of what is really needed in a situation? Some like to refer to this as procrastination, when we could do the right thing and resolve the case. Sometimes we are so busy with what we think is a priority and don’t find the time to sit and listen, which would be better often.
Jesus surprised Martha by saying that Mary was good sitting and listening.
Prayer
We thank you Lord that you are a God of surprises and you don’t always respond to our requests as we expect. We don’t make the time to listen to your voice and are too busy with our own interests and indulgences. Help us to discern the right way to deal with your love for all in these challenging times.
May we be still in your presence and hear your words for us all this day and always. Amen
