9. Lot’s Daughters – When Fear Distorts Faith

Read the Scripture Focus: Genesis 19:30–38

Reflection

Lot’s daughters survived what should have destroyed them. They escaped a burning city having walked out of judgment alive. They watched fire fall on everything they had known. Their home was gone and their future looked empty. Their world had collapsed overnight.

By the time they reached the mountains, their grief was layered:

  • They had lost their city.
  • They had lost their security.
  • They had lost relationships.
  • They had lost their sense of normalcy.
  • And they had lost their mother along the way.

They were alive—but deeply afraid.

Fear has a way of shrinking our vision until all we can see is survival. When fear leads, wisdom often follows at a terrible distance.

Lot’s daughters became convinced that: “There is no man left on earth.” “There is no future for us.” “Our family line will die with us.” Their conclusions were not shaped by God’s promise but rather they were shaped by trauma and isolation.

So, they made a desperate plan. Out of fear of extinction, they acted without consulting God. Out of panic about the future, they crossed moral boundaries. Out of survival instinct, they chose a path that brought long-term consequences.

Lot’s daughters teach us a hard truth: When fear replaces faith, desperation replaces discernment. They were not evil. They were traumatised. They were not malicious. They were misled by their pain. Their story reminds us that unhealed trauma can distort judgment. When the soul is overwhelmed, right and wrong can blur. When hope feels lost, shortcuts can look like solutions.

From these broken choices came two nations:

  • Moab
  • Ammon

These nations would later become both enemies and instruments of God’s unfolding story. Even when human decisions are flawed, God’s redemptive purposes are never defeated.

Lot’s daughters show us both a warning and a hope:

The warning: Fear will always rush you into decisions faith would tell you to wait on.

The hope: Even when people act in brokenness, God is still mighty enough to bring redemption through the mess.

Lot’s daughters survived the fire but they had not yet healed from the smoke. Many of us carry the same risk: escaping danger physically while still carrying danger emotionally.

God does not only want to rescue us from destruction, but he also wants to heal us from the fear that destruction leaves behind.

Reflection Questions

  • Where has fear influenced my recent decisions?
  • Are there areas of unresolved trauma that still shape my choices?
  • What would it look like for me to trust God with my future instead of controlling it?
  • What choices am I making out of fear right now?
  • Where might trauma be shaping my decisions more than trust in God?
  • Am I rushing into outcomes God is asking me to wait for?

Prayer

Father, you see every place where fear still tries to lead my life. Heal the places of trauma, loss, and confusion that distort my ability to trust you fully. Teach me to wait on you instead of rushing ahead in panic. I place my future into your hands today, believing you are faithful to guide me with truth, wisdom, and peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
