Luke 2 46-50

After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you”. “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” But they did not understand what he was saying to them.

Reflection

This passage is full of surprises with those who heard Jesus [Aged 12] amazed at his understanding, his parents amazed when they found him and Jesus himself surprised that they were concerned saying “Didn’t you know where I’d be?”

Because Jesus listened to those who had knowledge he was able to respond in the correct way. We could take his example and listen to what is being said. His parents were naturally concerned as to where Jesus was and they didn’t understand that he was more interested in what the teachers and scholars were saying. We could take more notice of those in authority and learn from their expertise. Jesus knew he needed to listen and learn, so was where he could do that. We could listen and learn more often to make right decisions and gain wisdom of situations rather than jump to our own conclusions.

Prayer

Heavenly Father help us to watch out for surprises in our daily lives, where you are working. May each one of us follow your wisdom and guidance by listening and learning in a receptive manner. We should surprise our fellow citizens with responses that they aren’t expecting by showing love and care, but we need the help of your spirit Lord. Be with each one of us in a special way as this world needs more care and compassion, we ask in the name of you our Heavenly Father. Amen
