I am in the privileged position of being part of a group who organize the telling of the Christmas and Easter story to our local primary school children.
In fact, they are taken on a “Journey” through the events of both of these Christian celebrations.
And although we are about to begin preparations for the “Christmas Journey”, it is something that happened this Easter past that I would like to share with you.
We invite year 6 children to “journey” through Holy Week, from Palm Sunday, to Jesus in the temple, sharing the Passover, and through to Easter Day.
And at the end of it we all share juice and biscuits and chat together about what they have seen and heard.
There is always a lot of chatter, as the children decide which part was best and which was saddest.
During the conversation one girl asked, “How do I know it’s true”.
What a question to come from such a young person.
Perhaps our children are bombarded with so many “stories”, that they no-longer know what to believe or even for some whom to trust.
Words can only tell the story, the Holy Spirit is the only one to bring those words to life, and so as individuals we discover the “story” is true.
A prayer: Lord Jesus come from your story into our story. We pray for our children, puzzled over so many differing stories and the uncertainty these bring into their lives. We pray that they may discover for themselves the love and care you have for each one of them and that each are your “special treasure”. We pray that as your church, our witness may not only be words spoken but lives lived in the reality of your constant love and presence, that our children may know that the story of Jesus is true.
Lord Jesus come from your story into their story. Amen.
