John 11: 25-27
25Jesus then said, “I am the one who raises the dead to life! Everyone who has faith in me will live, even if they die. 26 And everyone who lives because of faith in me will never really die. Do you believe this?”
27 “Yes, Lord!” she replied. “I believe you are the Christ, the Son of God. You are the one we hoped would come into the world.”
These verses are taken from one of the most moving stories in the Bible. Found in John 11; 1-45, the story of the raising of Lazarus.
This story reflects not only the power of God but the faith and prayer of Jesus. Lazarus was raised back to human life, meaning that eventually he would die again.
Jesus would make a journey through death and out on to the other side into a new sort of life – a journey of transformation that we will encounter again this Easter.
We can perhaps be aware of small transformations happening around and within us. Springtime fills us with the hope of returning new life.
Easter will soon be upon us, reassuring us that death is not the end of our story and that hope can transform us and refresh us.
Reflect and bring to mind Jesus setting out on his journey to the cross, but also think about your own future, immediate or longer-term,
and the hope you have in the risen Jesus.
Jesus begins his journey to the cross. He invites us to take up our cross and to follow him.
Prayer
Jesus, we thank you that willingly,
you took up your cross and shared in our sorrows.
Lord, we give you our thanks.
Jesus, we praise you for your transforming love.
Lord, we offer you our praise.
Jesus, help us to walk with you through the coming weeks,
and fill us with your hope and resurrection power.
Lord, help us to keep faith with you
until we share the joy of Easter Day. Amen.
