10. Jochebed – Faith That Acts in the Face of Fear
Read the Scripture: Exodus 1:22–2:10; Hebrews 11:23
Reflection
Jochebed lived at a time when fear was legislated. A royal decree declared that every Hebrew boy was to be thrown into the Nile. Motherhood itself became an act of resistance. To give birth to a son was to risk death—his and possibly her own.
Yet when Jochebed looked at her child, Scripture tells us she saw that he was “beautiful” (Exodus 2:2). This was not merely physical beauty. It was spiritual discernment. She recognised that this child carried purpose beyond his vulnerability. For three months, she hid him. Every cry threatened exposure. Every knock carried danger. Every day demanded courage.
However, faith does not always shout—it often whispers through careful obedience. When she could no longer hide him, Jochebed did something remarkable: she released him, not into abandonment, but into God’s hands. She crafted a basket, sealed it with care, and placed her son into the very waters meant to destroy him.
Jochebed did not deny the danger—she redeemed it.
She trusted God enough to let go, yet wisely positioned her daughter nearby to watch. Her faith was not reckless; it was active, thoughtful, and courageous. God honoured her faith.
The child she released into the Nile was drawn out of the water by Pharaoh’s own daughter. The boy sentenced to death was raised in the palace. The mother who let go was paid to nurse her own son. What fear intended for destruction, God used for deliverance.
Jochebed teaches us that faith is not passive waiting—it is obedient action under pressure. She reminds us that sometimes the greatest act of motherhood, leadership, or calling is not holding on, but entrusting what we love most to God’s care.
Her courage did not stop the decree, but it preserved a deliverer. Her faith did not remove danger, but it redirected destiny.
Reflection Questions
- What has God entrusted to me that feels vulnerable or threatened—and am I responding with fear, or with courageous, thoughtful faith?
- Is there something I am gripping tightly that God is asking me to entrust into his hands, believing He can protect and position it better than I can?
- How can I practice active faith in this season—taking wise, obedient steps even when the outcome feels uncertain?
Prayer
Faithful God, you see the pressures I face and the responsibilities I carry. Like Jochebed, I sometimes live in seasons where fear feels loud and risk feels real. Yet you remain sovereign over every decree, every danger, and every detail.
Teach me to respond with faith that acts wisely and courageously. When I must hold on, give me strength. When I must let go, give me trust. Help me to place what I love most into your hands, believing that you are able to guard, guide, and grow it beyond my sight.
Redeem what feels threatening. Position what feels fragile. Protect what I entrust to you. May my obedience, even under pressure, become part of your greater purpose. May I trust that what fear intends for harm, you can turn toward deliverance. Amen.
