Elizabeth – Joy After Long Waiting

Reflection
Elizabeth knew what it was to wait and to wait in silence.
For years she prayed the same prayer. For years she hoped for the same miracle. For years she carried both faith and disappointment in the same heart. In a culture where motherhood was seen as honour and fruitfulness as favour, Elizabeth lived with the quiet ache of barrenness.
Scripture tells us that she and her husband Zechariah were righteous before God, faithful, obedient, and blameless in their walk. Yet their prayers seemed unanswered.
Elizabeth teaches us that righteousness does not exempt us from waiting. Even the faithful must sometimes live with unanswered prayers for a season. However, God had not forgotten Elizabeth. He was not ignoring her tears nor delaying out of cruelty but was waiting for the perfect moment.
When the angel announced that Elizabeth would conceive in old age, Scripture says she hid herself for five months—not in shame, but in wonder. The miracle had finally come and in that quiet season, Elizabeth recognised what God had truly done: “The Lord has done this for me… to take away my disgrace among the people.”
God did not just give her a child, he restored her dignity. He healed her silent sorrow and answered years of longing in one divine moment. Elizabeth’s story becomes even more beautiful when Mary arrives at her door. Mary, young, confused, was carrying a miracle of her own. When Mary greeted Elizabeth, the baby leaped in Elizabeth’s womb, and the Spirit of God filled her heart. Elizabeth became the first person to publicly honour Mary’s calling. She did not compete with her. She celebrated her.
She said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb… Blessed is she who believed that the Lord would fulfil his promises to her!” Elizabeth teaches us that true joy does not envy another person’s miracle, it rejoices in it. She waited many years for her own blessing, yet she still had room in her heart to celebrate God’s work in someone else.
Elizabeth carried both:
- The miracle of finally receiving her own promise
- And the humility to honour someone else’s promise
Her life shows us that:
- Waiting seasons refine our faith.
- Delayed blessings deepen our gratitude.
- True joy celebrates what God is doing in others, not just in ourselves.
You may be in an Elizabeth season right now: Waiting for healing. Waiting for restoration. Waiting for direction. Waiting for God to speak clearly and you may be wondering if God has forgotten your name. Elizabeth’s life answers that question with hope: God is never late. God is never careless. God is never finished before the miracle is complete.
When your season turns— when your prayer is answered— when your heart finally holds the promise it longed for— your joy will be deeper than you ever imagined.

Prayer
Lord, you see every prayer I have whispered and every tear I have cried in the waiting. Help me trust your timing even when the delay feels heavy. Fill my heart with joy—not only for what you will do in me, but for what you are doing in others. I place my hope back into your hands today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
