Poverty
Psalm 140 v 12-13
I know that the Lord secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy. Surely the righteous will praise your name and the upright will live before you.
Poverty – The state of being extremely poor. A state in which an individual lacks the financial resources and essentials for a basic standard of living. (Wikipedia).
Poverty has been reported by the respected Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) available on the website. In summary: Poverty can lead to negative impacts at all stages of life. More than 1 in 5 people in the UK were in poverty in 2022/23, 8.1 million working age adults, 4.3 million children and 1.9 million pensioners. They concluded that there is a need to break out of a culture of low expectations of progress with concrete action, drawing on Labour manifesto commitments. JRF believe that beyond any actions in these areas, there needs to be a more holistic plan for hardship that addresses a wider range of causes and consequences of poverty, moving towards building economic security not waiting for growth first.
Let us Pray:
Lord Jesus Christ we come to you today aware of the many people in poverty in our country. This situation soon becomes hard to control and has a deepening affect, with the lack of basic essentials causing mental and physical difficulties. We pray for a time when less people are dependent on food banks and emergency food parcels. We thank you for work of these and other projects, which people rely on, and the many volunteers who give of their time. May the government be positive in their policy and decision making and keep their promises to eventually eliminate poverty among all people, young and old alike. We ask this prayer in your name O Lord. Amen
