On Saturday Jude Simms and I, travelled to the William Booth College in London to attend and represent MWiB at the ‘All We Can’ Conference. Meeting with many friends from across the Connexion we enjoyed what turned out to be a truly inspirational day!
Using a combination of song, prayer, Bible study and conversation we were guided into a clearer understanding of the true meaning of the word Justice. Not in the ’judicial court‘ sense but as God’s intention for His creation. We looked at how working together across the world to seek justice for those who have no voice, and finding sustainable practical ways to give assistance to those who have little hope for the future is making a difference.
Rev Dr Calvin Samuel, Principal of the London School of Theology started the day with an inspiring opening address pointing out that although the words ‘relief’ and ‘development’ don’t occur in scripture, love, seeking justice and providing for those who are not in a position to provide for themselves, are a common theme throughout both the Old and New Testament, expressing God’s heart for justice.
We heard personal stories about growing up in Malawi and Zimbabwe from Angela Zamaere and Clever Tabaziba and how their backgrounds had inspired them to want to make a lasting, sustainable difference for today and future generations.
We heard eye witness accounts from Loraine Mellor and Jill Baker, President and Vice President of Conference and from the All We Can team, about how working together in communities is visibly making a difference.
In the closing session we were invited by Dr Maurice Adams, CEO of All We Can, to reflect on what we had heard and seen, and to write a single word or phrase that had inspired us. Written on post-notes these inspiring thoughts were placed onto the huge inflatable globe pictured above.
Sometimes we feel insignificant and powerless when we look at world events and reports of poverty and despair yet, working together with a heart for justice, we can make a difference!
A huge thank you to the All We Can team, the speakers, Geraldine Latty, who led us in moving, prayerful worship and the Zimbabwean choir for their lively, traditional worship.
