My plans for the day changed this morning, when I received an unexpected invitation to join friends on a boat trip from the Barbican in Plymouth up the river Yealm. I dressed appropriately for the time of year and set off in the expectation of a gentle cruise. I had not reckoned with a very choppy sea crossing to and from the Yealm, but was relieved to reach shore without losing the delicious lunch to which my friends had treated me! Lots of comments en route about Jesus calming the storm and sharing of various rough sea crossing stories!
As I have reflected tonight on how relieved I felt to reach terra firma after just two hours at sea, I have thought of those thousands of our fellow human beings who have set off to cross the sea and failed to arrive safely at their destination.
O hear us when we cry to Thee, for those in peril on the sea…
