The Methodist Church has it’s roots in doing things differently, reaching out to community outside the confines of church buildings, working on the streets, visiting those who are housebound and leading ‘Open the Book’ in schools are just a few examples of what we do. ‘Being Church’ outside church is as important today as it has always been.
Offering hospitality is of course also an integral and equally important part of what we do. There are many different and innovative ways in which we offer hospitality and service but, by its very nature, it’s reliant on people making the effort to come to us rather than the other way around.
‘The Carpenter’s Arms’, one of the two small village pubs in Harlington, opens its doors periodically to welcome these ‘strange people called Methodists’ along with our Bible text, song sheets and keyboard.
At the beginning of December we went along to hold what has now become our annual ‘Beer and Carols’ evening. Organised and led by local preacher and Boys Brigade leader Martin Wallis, we sang and talked our way through the real meaning of Christmas ably accompanied by Father Christmas on the keyboard.
It was an excellent evening!
