The day has been a busy one. Marquees are up, toilets are in situ and one of our fields is being gradually transformed into a canvas village, which will be home to this year’s Region 6 Girls’ Brigade summer camp.
I attended the camp every summer from the age of 10 and in 1980 a friend and I took over its shared leadership. Marilyn and I headed up an enthusiastic team of women, all prepared to spend one or sometimes two weeks every summer caring for the girls who came. I continued until 2008, when two younger leaders, Claire and Liz, stepped forward to carry on and develop the event. I have not been on the resident team of leaders since that point.
They passed on the baton three years ago to Sam and Katie. Katie is my youngest daughter, and it has been a privilege not only to watch her take on this massive responsibility in her early twenties, but also to be asked to mentor her through the process. Sam chose Sue, her GB leader from Cardiff, to be her mentor, but in reality the two ‘girls’ have carried the responsibility themselves, working to secure the confidence of their team of helpers and to develop a programme relevant for girls between the ages of 10 and 18.
