Jairus’s Daughter – When Jesus Speaks Life After Silence

Jairus’s daughter never speaks a recorded word in Scripture, yet her story speaks loudly to every heart that has ever felt powerless.
She was only twelve years old—young, vulnerable, and dependent on others for survival. While her father pleaded publicly for her life, she lay privately on the edge of death. She could not pray aloud. She could not reach for Jesus herself. Her story reminds us that sometimes faith must be carried by others when our own strength is gone.
As Jesus made his way to her, delay intervened. Another woman needed healing. Time passed. News arrived that the child had died. Hope seemed extinguished before help arrived. Yet Jesus spoke words that defied despair:
“Do not fear; only believe.”
When Jesus entered the house, grief filled the room. Mourners wailed. Doubt mocked. Jesus dismissed the noise of unbelief and stepped into the quiet space of trust. He took the girl by the hand and spoke tenderly:
“Talitha cumi.” “Little girl, arise.” Death did not argue. The child obeyed. Life returned at the sound of His voice.
Jairus’s daughter teaches us that Jesus does not require our strength to perform his miracles—only his presence. She contributes nothing but need, and yet she receives everything. Her restoration reminds us that God’s grace is not earned by effort but given in love.
After raising her, Jesus gave simple instructions: “Give her something to eat.” Even after resurrection, Jesus cared about her daily needs. He showed that miracles are not meant to end at the altar—they continue into ordinary life.
You may feel like Jairus’s daughter today:

- Dependent where you wish you were capable
- Silent in a place where others are speaking for you
- Waiting while hope feels delayed
Her story whispers this truth: Jesus still takes the hand of the powerless, still speaks life where silence has settled, and still restores what others declare finished. When Jesus calls you to rise, even death must listen.

Prayer
Jesus, when I feel weak, silent, or unable to move forward, I place my life in your hands. Like Jairus’s daughter, I need your touch and your voice. Where hope feels delayed or gone, speak life again. Take my hand, lift me from fear, and restore what has been lost. Help me trust you not only for miracles, but also for the everyday strength I need to live fully. I rise at your command. In your name, Amen.
