A few weeks ago, we shared the story of Jesus walking on water, and let’s not forget that Peter walked on the water too. What a wow moment it must have been for Peter as he took that first step onto the waves. Perhaps frightening and exhilarating too, but he was ok as long as he remembered Jesus said “he could”. But I wonder how Jesus felt as he watched Peter step out of the safety of the boat and put his “faith” into action. I wonder, was it as joyous as when we saw our own children let go of whatever was their safety net, furniture, toy, hand and take their first step on their own, or was it even more so? No doubt we all admit to that feeling of fear whenever we take those first few steps of faith into what as yet we do not know.
Payer: Lord, we so like the safety of the boat, the comfort of the usual, to step out into something new can be frightening beyond words. So, Lord give us courage to do what you ask, even if it is strange to us, just as Peter stepped out in faith when you called him to come to you from the boat. Thank you that you were there to save him when his faith faltered. Thank you that you call us to new things with you every day, give us the courage of Peter when you call us to follow you.
Amen.
